PWF BridgeWelcome to QOC's classic orienteering event at picturesque Prince William Forest Park near Quantico, VA. This event will have a classic set of courses courtesy of setter Vido Aleksiev; final course stats are now posted below.
NOTE: Since the final course lengths vary significantly in some cases from the lengths originally posted, orienteers who registered before 10pm Wednesday and wish to change their course selection should use our Contact form to submit a "please change my course from ___ to ____" request.

Pre-registration is required and will open at 6pm on Monday Nov. 17 and close Saturday at noon. Advance online registration with payment is required. Event timing will be our standard: check-in during your chosen window, start fairly soon thereafter, and make sure to be out of the woods and back to the Finish by 3pm. Even if you don't finish your course, be sure to stop by the e-punch table, download, and let them know you are out of woods.

There is a park entrance fee of $20 per car (up to 14 passengers). The park also offers an annual pass for $35 (good for other QOC events at PWFP over the next year) or the National Park Annual Pass for $80 (good at all National Parks for one year). Those 62+ can buy a lifetime Senior Pass for $80 or an annual Senior Pass for $20 good at all National Parks. If there is a PWFP employee manning the booth as you enter the park, you will pay there and get a receipt to put on your dashboard; otherwise, you need to pay either via recreation.gov or at the Visitor Center before going to park at the ball field.

A note about parking: Parking will be at the Williams Ball Field. The entrance is across from the Visitors Center and is on a one-way road where a volunteer will be stationed to provide directions. When leaving the park, exit via the other (far) end of the field. Please do not drive on the road back towards the Visitors Center.

New to orienteering? We will hold beginner clinics continuously during the event; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and Orienteering Techniques For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away!

Group Leaders: please see our For Group Leaders webpage and then contact the Event Director so your group can get pre-registered in advance. Do not use the online registration (it's for individuals and groups of 4 or less).

Our club runs on the incredible energy of our amazing volunteers - a massive thank you to those who volunteer week after week! Thanks to you, we’re able to offer an event almost every weekend in the season! We’re always looking for new volunteers to help, so sign up for a volunteer slot via this form or email the Event Director directly for other options.

Additional Information:

  • As mentioned above, parking for QOC participants will be in the (nearby) Williams Ballfield, a short walk from our registration area in the Pine Grove Pavilion.
  • Dogs are welcome in this park but must be kept on leash at all times.

Course NotesClassic

Start: 230 m from the event center.
Finish: Next to the event center.

From the park authorities:
“All participants, if they find anything of historical interest (other than modern trash) are to leave it be. If they want to take a picture, and note the location, and forward on to QOC that would be great.”

River crossing:
The Blue, Red, Green, Brown and Orange courses cross South Fork Quantico Creek. The courses are designed to have a bridge option for crossing it. There are sections of the creek mapped with the uncrossable stream bank symbol. The Blue, Red, Green courses have river crossings where there is a road bridge that can be used. The bridge doesn’t have a separate section for pedestrians, so please watch out for traffic if using the bridge.

Road crossings:
The Blue, Red, Green courses cross park roads. Be careful when crossing.

Vegetation:
In some areas there is intensive deadfall. Most of the course legs avoid these areas but there are a couple of legs that cross such areas. Competitors will generally do best going around deadfall mapped as Slow Walk when possible.

Miscellaneous:
There are some instances of old telegraph wire on the ground. These have been flagged where found.

Several out of bounds areas (maintenance area, ranger residence, other) have been designated by the park. They are shown on the map but are not flagged. Some may be sections in open forest. Under penalty of disqualification, please use the map to keep an appropriate distance from all of these areas, especially where there are easy to identify buildings and roads.

Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $60 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • There is no planned, on-site beginner instruction, but beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst
