QOC Needs You!The Mid-Atlantic Champs pit QOC against neighboring clubs DVOA, SVO, and WPOC. All QOC members are encouraged to come help us at the very least win the most points for participation!

Registration is now closed, and was mandatory. There will be no day-of registration at the event.

The Orienteering USA affiliated club with the highest number of points overall, based on placement in each classic course + participation + team relay results, wins the Broken Compass Award. [Full rules are here.] This year the event will be hosted by QOC at Rosaryville State Park, just southeast of the DC beltway in Prince Georges County, Maryland (driving directions are below).

Course stats and course setter comments for the classic (white through blue) and relay legs are posted below.

To view past orienteering courses at Rosaryville, head to our RouteGadget site, for example to the April 2014 event held here. A trail map from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources trail map PDF is also available here.

Relay Runners: We will have a Team Coordinator at the event collect team information from each club. The QOC Relay Team Coordinator is David Onkst - who requests all QOC orienteers to fill in this form ASAP. We will post the names of the other club Team Coordinators as soon we know them.
If all relay team members are running a classic course, there's no additional cost. If only running the relay, please Contact Us, providing your epunch and contact details, so we can invoice you before the event by PayPal.

Relay Course Details:
Leg 1 (intermediate/advanced): 2.3k, 55m climb, 7 controls
Leg 2 (beginner/intermediate): 1.6k, 45m climb, 7 controls; group start 40 min. after race start;
Leg 3 (advanced): 3.2k, 80m climb, 9 controls; group start 55 min. after race start.

New to orienteering? We will hold beginner clinics continuously during the event; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away.

Traffic Warning! There will be a football game at FedEx Field at 1pm that could severely impact I-495 traffic. Heaviest traffic is usually from 11am until game time and then when the game ends around 4pm.

Have some extra time? Please contact our Event Director if you've got time to volunteer for one of the following: (1) Relay Support - At least one more person to help Jay manage the relay, (2) Control Pickup - two non-Relay Runners (starting at 3 PM) + at least one more for after the relay, and (3) Grill Meister - One more volunteer to help cook hot dogs.

Course NotesMid-Atlantic Champs

  • Individual courses and Relay courses will have separate starts and finishes as well as controls.
  • The areas marked as heavy vegetation (dark green on the map) are extremely dense and in many cases, impassable (even narrow sections marked near open areas). Route choices through heavy vegetation are not recommended.
  • For advanced courses, note that the road marked with X’s in the southwest section of the map is a forbidden route. Do not use this road!
  • Certain recently defined small trail-like meanderings, called the "Agricultural Heritage" and "Bird" trails, go through and around open areas; they are not mapped and can be ignored;
  • Many root stocks shown on the map are not reliable and should not be used for navigation.
  • The special objects (“X”s) in the open areas are horse jumps. A very recent map update has been made to show their positions, but since they could theoretically move in the 72 hours before our event you should still be careful using them for navigation.
  • Every relay leg consists of two distinct loops with a spectator control separating the loops. The spectator control will bring runners very close to the main pavilion.
  • Rosaryville receives a lot of horse traffic. Be aware that when running on trails, you may encounter horses.
  • Map scales are: White, Yellow, and all Relay Legs are 1:5,000; Orange, Brown, Green, Red, and Blue are 1:10,000
  • Contour interval is 5m

Event Rules in all their glorious detail are located here.

Important Notes
  • Pre-registration online is required for this event; you may use a credit/debit card or PayPal account.
  • You may become a member at the event or by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times, and can accompany an orienteer on their individual/classic course. However, due to the nature of the race, dogs are not permitted on the relay course.
