December 7
Sunday

PWF Bridge Breaking News! There's good news and, well, other news. First the good news: after a predicted very wet Saturday, the weather for this Sunday's event is actually reasonable - high 40's and relatively sunny. The other news: we have just been informed that we will not be allowed to collect any money at this event, in contrast to the last 5+ years of events here. Pre-registration is now open: click here to register and pay. You can also just show up at the event and be invoiced afterwards, but it will save both you and us time if you register in advance instead. Who has already registed? Those listed here.

Welcome to QOC's classic orienteering event at picturesque Prince William Forest Park near Quantico, VA. This event will have a full set of seven courses (white through blue) courtesy of course setter Vido Aleksiev; course details and comments are now shown below. Note that the Orange/Intermediate course will have several relatively advanced legs and is therefore not a good choice for runners moving up from yellow for the first time.

Event timing will be our standard: register any time between 10:45 - 1:15, start between 11 - 1:30, and make sure to be out of the woods and back to the Finish by 3pm.

New to orienteering? We will hold beginner clinics continuously during the event; just tell the friendly folks at registration if you'd like to be in one and they'll take care of you. Also, make sure to check out our Your First Event and For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Us form and ask away!

Group Leaders: please see our For Group Leaders webpage and then contact the Event Director so your group can get pre-registered in advance.

Additional Information:

  • If you do not have a National Park or Prince William Forest Park annual pass, the park entry fee is $5 per vehicle (another good reason to carpool!). If the gatehouse is not manned, you must pay the fee at the Visitor Center that you will pass on your way to the parking area.
  • Contour interval for all maps is 5m. Map scales will be announced closer to the event date, but are likely to be 1:5000 for white & yellow, 1:7500 for orange, and 1:10000 for all advanced courses.
  • Dogs are welcome in this park but must be kept on leash at all times.

Nearby Attraction: The National Museum of the Marine Corps is open from 9am - 5pm everyday, and admission is free to this impressive $60 million structure.

Wegmans Post-Race MeetUp Venue: The nearby Wegman's in Woodbridge welcomes all orienteers patronizing their Market Cafe Sunday afternoon after our event. Check out the reviews and especially the photos on Yelp to see just how popular (and large) this place is. Located (here) just two exits north on I-95 from our event, their Market Cafe upstairs offers an enormous selection of foods (plus free WiFi). It's a fine place to hang out and discuss your routes, so bring your map in with you!

Course NotesClassic

The Start and Finish locations for all courses are next to the registration and download area which will be at the Pine Grove pavilion. There is unmapped deadfall in some areas of this map. The vegetation was not updated, but the changes are not that noticeable during this time of the year as they were a couple of months ago. The last few legs for all courses have more climb than the others because of the finish location. No courses cross roads with vehicle traffic. The map scale for the Beginner (White and Yellow) courses is 1:5000. The scale for intermediate (Orange) course is 1:7500. For the advanced (Green and higher) courses the map scale is 1:10000.

Advanced courses (Green and higher) will cross the South Fork of Quantico Creek twice. It is crossable, but if you want to stay dry, consider using the bridge when you are making your route choice. Advanced courses will have one water control. In addition, the advanced course runners can use the water control from a beginner course that is close to the South Fork bridge and which will be marked as a refreshment point.

Beginner (White & Yellow) and Intermediate (Orange) courses will not cross the South Fork of Quantico Creek. Beginner courses will have one water control.
