After a 42-day snow-caused drought of QOC events, the weather finally cooperated enough for us to hold an event at a park that hasn't seen orienteering since 2019. The shade was cool, but the sun was warm at Stuart's Hill. Participants had a choice of seven courses taking them around the historic area – navigating the rolling hills with little more than a map and compass similar to how the soldiers did in the 1860s.
Events like these don't happen without the time and efforts of our volunteers.
Mary Snieckus arrived early to help me set up the event while I was out hanging the beginner controls. Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer set up and ran e-punch.
The stalwart Harry Jones greeted and checked-in our early racers, reminding them to yield to equestrians and not to climb on the cannons. He was relieved by Heidi Onkst who dutifully repeated Harry’s instructions.
Beàtri Bennett and Justin Green provided beginner instruction.
At the end of the event, John Baker, Bill Wright, Dave Onkst, Pepe, Wendy Wroblewski and Mike Studeman (all the way from CVOC!) went back out to pick up controls.
Today's event actually started several months ago with behind-the-scenes efforts by Dennis Doherty, the QOC VA VP of Permits, who worked with the NPS to secure a permit for our event. Greg Lennon set up online registration (and the volunteer signup tool), and Kathleen Lennon promoted the event. After I finished designing my courses, Craig Shelden added graphics and selected the layout so Valerie could print them and seal them. Mike Dvorsky set up the LiveLox event so you can quickly review just where in the thorns you got stuck.
If you’ve missed QOC orienteering events just as much as I did, good news! There is lots of orienteering coming up in March! Mark your calendars:

• March 8, Gambrill - This is an attendance limited event, but as of this evening, there is still availability on both the 3-hour and 8-hour courses.
• March 20-22, US Champs - 3 days of orienteering!
• March 29, Prince William Forest - After several several cancellations due to conditions, the Bumble is back!
