Wow! What a day for an orienteering event. After quite a prolonged gray and gloomy period we all got to enjoy a glorious sunny October day out in the lovely grounds and woods of Gunston Hall.
As ever, everything we are able to enjoy starts and ends with Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer, not only getting us all out on the right course and the right time, but all their work during the week, sorting out innumerable little problems as the day goes along and simply unpacking and repacking their cars with all that gear! It's a lot!
They put 234 starts and 326 total participants out on Gary Smith's excellently designed courses. I heard many compliments of very enjoyable routes squashed into a relatively small area. We had a number of Scout and ROTC groups and individual runners of all abilities enjoy the courses, as well.
Registration was under the excellent control of Harry Jones and a busy beginner instruction day was handled by Paul Hession.
Jane Leggett kindly offered to help as a crossing guard on Gunston Road, Francielo Della Costa recorded the day photographically for us and Sharmagh Yepremian did a multitude of outreach and ambassadorial duties on the day to make the event all that more pleasant.
For control pickup, we had John Baker, Charles Carrick, Stephen Pepe, Micheal Tyson, Bill Wright, Greg Lennon and Mark Thomsen all go out and clean the course of controls and flags.
Behind the scenes, on the day and for weeks beforehand, we had Matt Smith and Dennis Doherty sorting everything else you can think of needed to hold an event of this nature, from equipment to permits to porta potties!
