The cold, blustery weather did little to discourage hardy QOC orienteers who came out in large numbers for our first-ever Movin’ Up to Orange event at Cabin John on Sunday. In addition to white, yellow, and orange courses, participants had the opportunity to go out on the orange course under the guidance of an experienced QOC orienteer who gave pointers on how to best manage the challenge of going off-trail to find controls buried deep in the woods. To top off the day-long experience, there was a relay event in the afternoon.
Many thanks to the advanced orienteers who volunteered to spend a few hours to help their clubmates get better at the sport we all love. And thanks to all of those who agreed to be coached. The reports I received after the event indicated that everyone who participated enjoyed the experience. I look forward to watching the results pages of future events to see the progress these orienteers make. Hopefully, they’ll be ready to serve as shadow coaches next time we do this.
I’d like to also recognize those who volunteered to help run the event. Nadim Ahmed set the great courses on the north side of the park where most beginner and intermediate orienteers had never had the chance to previously compete. Nadim was also instrumental in organizing the relay event in the afternoon. To Valerie Meyer for printing and sealing the maps, running the electronic timing operation, and dealing with the general chaos that always accompanies relays. To Harry Jones for handling the registration check-in operation on an icy and windy hill, and to my daughter, Michelle Wilson, for helping me as Co-Meet Director. In addition to helping set up everything bright and early, she jumped in when we needed a last-minute shadow coach. What I may lack in the area of organization skills, Michelle excels. Thanks, Mouse!
And finally, when everyone else is home sipping on hot chocolate to warm their bones, there are still a bunch of controls out there that need to be collected. Thanks to Tom Wells, Howie Weinstein, John Baker, Ted Good, Erin Brandt, and Michael Dickey for handling that chore quickly and efficiently.
If you have photos (preferably in focus!) that you'd like to share from this event feel free to either email them to Kathleen Lennon or DM her via IG.
