We had 158 Starts in this cold and super wet day and everyone was dressed well for the weather. One person used a strategically modified garbage bag as rain gear and a ziplock bag as a rain hat. We had multiple families come, even in this dismal weather. Young children in backpacks (with rain cover) as well as several families with children under 6 who came out dressed in a variety of colorful raincoats and rainboots. The Blue Jay Pavilion was a wonderful refuge from the unceasing rain and kept our registration/e-punch volunteers dry. We even had power(yay!) for our computers. If only all our venues were civilized, so well equipped, and accessible. Everyone who came followed COVID-19 protocol set forth by QOC and were masked, maintained social distancing, and those that came and participated answered "no" to the questions related to potential COVID exposure or symptoms. Several runners report that they like the fast nature of the courses but not the weather, not the extra aggressive thorns/pricker bushes, not the muddy courses, and not having to wade in knee to waist high water. MapRun was popular and runners were intrigued and those who tried liked this new feature.

This day could not be possible without our army of volunteers. Thank you to:

  • Sam Listwak who designed the course.
  • Don Fish who hung out controls throughout the week and to Don, Craig Shelden, and Alex Merka, who came together to hang the rest of the controls on Saturday.
  • Craig Shelden for energetically promoting MapRun.
  • Mike Newman who obtained our permits as the first and crucial step
  • Greg Lennon who posted this event on the QOC website and set-up and ran the online registration.
  • Tom Nolan who put out traffic signs, hang out starts/finishes controls, set flags to yellow and white start, and volunteered at check-in and close up as well.
  • Rob Briber who came early to help with the set-up, move tables, unpack, and volunteered for the registration table.
  • Alex Merka and Dasa Merkova, who came ALL DAY, starting early morning to hang banners, volunteer check-in/registration, ran Green and Brown, respectively, and again to Alex, who also Volunteered for control pick up. Super Alex deserves a special shout out - for volunteering all day and after helping to hang controls the day before!! Thank you, thank you, Alex.
  • Our intrepid e-Punch crew extraordinaire, Valerie Meyer and Amy Louden. We are all incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated duo and I marvel at the seamless clockwork process they have created. And -- to Amy for wonderful lovingly baked cookies for so many many orienteering events.
  • Lailah Strube and to Wendy Wroblewski for assisting and providing much needed support to our e-punch team.
  • Joe Pastel who cheerfully and immediately agreed to volunteer when I called for help and provided late hour hour support at our registration table.
  • Our control pick up crew - Addie Nolan, Glenn Pastel, Kim and Anne Jepsen, Alex Merka, Michel Jarnik - who waited after their runs in the cold, and ran out again in the rain to pick up all those controls. Another special mention - to Addie and Glenn who have volunteered to do control pickups in 4 of the last 5 meets!
  • Gary Smith for sorting the controls when they came in, and taking the meet kit and for volunteering in our future next Virginia meet.
Thank you again, dear Volunteers.
We could not have done it without the collective efforts of all these great folks. All in all, a very successful meet!
