You're Invited! Along with the course setter for this event, Keg Good, QOC veteran Sidney Sachs will host a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 29 of September at 8 pm to review selected Gunston Hall course legs and analyze the routes various orienteers took. Please contact Sid for the invite link.

Not great weather--humid and a bit drizzly--for our first QOC event in almost seven months, but a great occasion nonetheless as the club overcame multiple hurdles to resume its tradition of mounting a full and robust season schedule, even under the challenging circumstances we face in 2020.
Great to see the robust scout presence at our event today with a big presence from Troops 996 and 1882 as well as several other scout units.
Thanks to the volunteers who stepped up to prep, execute and clean up after the event:
Paul Collinson, Paul Hession, and Nic Turza arrived early to help set up our operation. Paul Collinson continued his tradition of finding creative ways to display our red orienteering banner--this time on across the back of our two port-a-johns.
Bill Vienna, Dasa Merkova, Howell Desierto, Don Fish, Radka Herndon, Tim McCormick, and Elias Pozuelos checked in and provided maps and compasses to our participants. Elias is a first-time participant, soon-to-be member, and Marine officer at Marine Corps Base Quantico--the site of QOC's next Virginia meet on October 17th and the birthplace and namesake of our club.
Bill Wright, Blaire Bingham, Gary and Ginny Quam monitored the White-Yellow-Orange and Brown-Green-Red-Blue starts.
Paul Hession and Harry Jones were our crossing guards on Gunston Rd, facilitating course setter Keg Good's pioneering use of Gunston Hall's property west of the Gunston Rd for part of her courses, which earned unstinting praise from some of our most experienced orienteers. Gunston Hall is a small park, so it's great to see course setters maximizing the value we can get out of the venue. And Daniel Heimgartner, from his new home in New York, provided map updates remotely to Keg. Thanks for continuing to support QOC, Daniel!
Thanks also to those who picked up controls and cleaned/disinfected them for use at Quantico--Beaver Dam Run: Patrick Farley, Mark Thomsen, John Organek, John Baker and Gwen Neuhaus as well as course setters for the Beaver Dam Run meet, Gavin Weise and Rob Field.
Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer dealt with the deluge of scout start-teams in the early part of the event with their customary aplomb, greatly assisted by Aaron and Laura Linville, Mary Snieckus, and Lailah Strube.
Finally, we appreciate the help of Nicole Morton and the entire Gunston Hall staff in support of our event. A special thanks to groundskeeper Berto Delfi-Hernandez for mowing down the field that we used for our administrative area late on the Friday afternoon before the meet, so we didn't have to operate in a chigger-rich environment even before punching start.
With a front coming through the area early this coming week and sunny, cooler weather forecast for next weekend, Cunningham Falls should be a great autumn event. See you there!
