Thanks to everyone who attended and made QOC’s second-ever, regular-season Blockhouse Point event a success! We had a beautiful day for orienteering, with sunny skies and a strong breeze at times. Even though it was a chilly morning for May, with temperatures in the 30s, it warmed up nicely by the afternoon. We had 148 starts with 202 total orienteers participating in the event, with a handful of first-timers, running a full set of classic courses (including Beige!) designed and set by Greg and Kathleen Lennon. All the feedback I heard about the courses set by the Lennons was positive, with enjoyable open woods, challenging navigation, and some steep climbs. Plus, the bonus signage directing advanced courses across Muddy Branch under the River Road bridge! Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped during the event, from start to finish, including some not listed below who offered their help as backup if needed.

• Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer, our e-punch gurus, worked the timing tent all day, with Valerie also printing and sealing the maps the day before. They were assisted by Aaron Linville and Lexie Brown. Amy’s cookies are always a hit!
• Greg Lennon handled webmaster duties, updating the event page and creating participant and volunteer registration forms.
• Mike Newman worked with Blockhouse Point and Bretton Woods to secure event permits for both locations, as well as coordinating the portajohn and shuttle facilities for the parking area and remote start.
• Daryl from Chariots for Hire shuttled our orienteers all day, driving to and from Blockhouse Point.
• Harry Jones, Suzanne Izzo, Greg Schwieterman, and several others helped with event set-up.
• Ninely Murphy and Harry Jones handled event registration for the first shift, braving the cold, yet Harry stayed for the second shift as well, assisted by Richard Briggs.
• Jason Hataye and Gary Quam taught beginner instruction at the remote start at Blockhouse for several individuals and groups of new orienteers.
• Stephanie Coffin, Heidi Onkst, and Ginny Quam directed orienteers getting off the shuttle at Blockhouse to their respective start locations.
• Reiko and David Rager, Cecilia and Jody Landers, and several others helped with event clean up at Bretton Woods.
• Thanks also to the Ragers (and Don Fish) for answering my many questions as a second-time event director, as well as taking the meet kit after the event!
• Sidney Sachs provided statistics for the total count of orienteers in attendance and updated the season-long points standings.
• Last but certainly not least, John Baker, Carl Lundgren, Howie Weinstein, Stephen Pepe, Tanya Senanayake, Aaron Linville, and David Onkst helped with control pickup. Greg and Kathleen Lennon coordinated control pickup while I was busy finishing up at Bretton Woods. Of note, Tanya was a first-time orienteer, going out for a second orienteering course with Pepe, and staying to help with control pickup!
