Thanks to all who participated in our orienteering meet at Marine Corps Base Quantico on Saturday, May 10, 2025. The weather was perfect for orienteering. We had 136 starts and 162 participants who ran a full slate of classic orienteering courses designed and set by Aaron Linville. This year we also had a number of active duty Marines participate, as well as two NJROTC units – Great Mills with 8 participants and York with 21 participants. The one negative experience of the day was the time required for many participants to get their Base access clearance through the Visitor Control Center, which, while unfortunate, is the one thing that is out of our control.

Heartfelt thanks to the many volunteers who made the event possible. A special thanks to Aaron Linville, who, in addition to designing and setting the courses, helped with set-up, conducted beginner instruction, manned the timing computer to give Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer a break, and coordinated control pickup. Speaking of Amy & Valerie, once again our world-class timing team did a faultless job of preparing & printing maps, issuing e-punches, getting everyone in the timing system, tracking participants (including the few late returners), and posting results. Amy even beat me to the site in the morning and, as usual, provided delicious treats at the finish. Thanks to Greg Lennon for handling the website and registration process, which, due to the Base restrictions on what we can publish prior to event approval and the decision to allow active duty military free registration, requires more effort than a normal meet. John Organek was present at the Visitor Control Center in the morning to help get folks cleared to get on Base (the slowness there was not his fault). The ever dependable Harry Jones handled morning check-in and came back after completing his course to wrap things up. Don Fish manned check-in during his absence. Control pickers were Ed Joseph (2 pickup runs!), Will Chesarek, Charles Carrick, Greg Lennon, and Matt Smith. An unseen volunteer who deserves credit is Sidney Sachs, who collects and maintains statistics on all our meets as well as a list of those who volunteer. Finally, a special thanks to the Dumfries-Triangle Volunteer Fire Department, which provided medical support with two vehicles (and a Gator) and a number of personnel. Fortunately, there were no medical emergencies, but they did help search for a couple of participants who were temporarily lost.

Last, but not least, thanks to everyone for only putting toilet paper down the porta-potties. That saved me from getting my OIC/RSO certification revoked. And yes, when the Marine came to check out the area before releasing me, he looked in every porta-potty for “unauthorized trash.”
