Today started mildly damp and progressed into deluge while 88 Orienteers braved the weather. We had the opportunity to use the Area Five Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Championship courses from the previous day and they surpassed expectations thanks to the Mike and Pam Dvorsky’s course design. We had participants from Southeast Maryland and Virginia Beach in addition to local members and visitors from neighboring clubs. Despite the soggy weather, everyone’s spirits remained high.
In our volunteer powered club, no event of any size or quality can happen without our volunteer team.
Here are some of the folks that made this event possible:
Behind the scenes
– Dave Linthicum developed the base map
-- Mike Newman acquired our permits and insurance.
– Greg Lennon incorporated numerous web page updates and served as Registrar for this event… and all our others within recent memory, too!
– Kathleen Lennon and Sharmagh Yepremian spread word of the event
-- Valerie Myer printed event maps
-- Pam Dvorsky stuffed and sealed event map cases and prepared clue sheets.
Course Setters Pam and Mike Dvorsky designed and set the courses. Months ago, behind the scenes, Mike also helped our scheduling team by suggesting the use of the NJROTC championship courses from the previous day, which he also designed.
For Game Day, Harry Jones and Don Fish helped set up. Harry then managed check in and map issue with three first time volunteers Susan Shoemaker, Gus Larsson and Jen Larsson, sharing his experience for great welcomes and first impressions. Patrick O’Shea kept order along the entrance road for parking and coned off the soggiest areas. As I drove out Sunday evening, I was pleased to see normal, damp grass where we parked. No ruts! Thanks Patrick!
I don’t think he had many customers, but Rob Briber made sure our beginners had instruction available.
Throughout the event, Mike Dvorsky demonstrated LiveLox software and highlighted the capabilities of this service. Mike adds:
"Thanks to all who experimented with Livelox today. You can access the tracks via the Livelox app on your phone by clicking on "Routes" or at https://www.livelox.com/Events/Show/117719?qr=true or by scanning the QR code printed on your course map. Play around with it and try all the possibilities for display. You can't break anything so click on everything and see what happens. If you didn't run with your cell phone, you can simply upload your track from Garmin Connect, Stava, Polar, Suunto, and others by linking your account to Livelox. We would appreciate your feedback on what you think of using Livelox at QOC events, as well as any comments and recommendations about how to make Livelox a better product. Any and all comments, pro and con, are welcome. Email them to me and I will consolidate and forward them to Matt Smith."
While waiting for a meeting to introduce Orienteering for a potential future venue, Ted Good provided outstanding course reviews with many finishers.
After my unplanned departure with an injured participant, Don Fish stepped forward to take on Meet Director duties. As things wound down, Jody Landers took care of clean up and pack out – we left things as clean or cleaner than we found them.
Thanks to the weather, control pickup volunteers Jonathan Barone, Tom Wells, Ken Walker Jr., Samantha Walker and Howie Weinstein did not have to return to the soggy woods for control pickup. That privilege will go to Mike and Pam Dvorsky, Dave Linthicum, and John Vincent after the bags dry off a bit.
No one would ever really know how they did without our patient score keeper Amy Louden, who served as epunch guru for a second day!
Finally, I offer apologies to everyone on the Brown, Red and Blue courses who were thrown off by a misplaced control # 95 which was inadvertently placed about 40 meters west of its intended position. I hope no one wasted too much time looking for it.
The strength of our club remains its members, and I am always privileged to work with them.
Craig Shelden, Meet Director
