The second Quantico Marine Base event of the orienteering year was at Landing Zone Canary. Fortunately, the rain held off until most runners had completed their course. We had 105 Starts on the full slate of challenging courses designed by Aaron Linville across some great terrain. The advanced courses were challenging with longer legs than most Virginia venues can support. Bill Wright’s coordination with the base secured the venue, and he also spent the morning at the Visitor Control Center guiding competitors through the base access process. Harry Jones’ set up and ran check in assisted by Jen Fauth and Craig Shelden ensuring after the long trip to LZ Canary competitors could get into the woods quickly. John Organek and David LeVine ensured we had safe and convenient parking on the landing zone. Charles Carrick was everywhere helping with check-in and parking. Greg and Kathleen Lennon helped club members with placing their QOC jersey orders while photographing the event. Craig, Charles, Kathleen and Greg also helped up round up a few orienteers who needed extra assistance.
The travel distance award goes to Bensalem High School Marine Corps JROTC with a 216 miles one-way (!) to join us at LZ Canary.
