You're Invited! Along with the course setter for this event, QOC veteran Sidney Sachs will host a Zoom meeting on Tuesday, October 27 at 8 pm to review selected Beaver Dam Run course legs and analyze the routes various orienteers took. Please contact Sid for the invite link.

The weather was absolutely perfect at the Beaver Dam Run Quantico Classic Orienteering meet. The Club returned to our roots and ranged some superb terrain for our full set of courses designed by Gavin Weise and Rob Field. Access to the active Marine Base was challenging but it was not an insurmountable obstacle thanks to the efforts of Bill Wright and John Organek who spent a lot of the morning at the Visitor Control Center facilitating processing.
Bill Vienna, Man Nguyen, Jana Seidlova, were crucial to getting the site set up and running with the early arrival of a large group of Scouts anxious to get on the course. Matt Knight, Paul Hession, and Heidi Onkst were super stars helping check folks in and get them their maps and compasses so they could enjoy a spectacular fall day in the woods. The entire check-In crew handled the extra Marine Corps Base waivers with aplomb.
John Baker and Will Chesarek monitored the start points to ensure enthusiasm to start did not compromise our safety. Valerie Meyer and Amy Louden with assistance from Mary Snieckus and Aaron Linville kept our epunching and statistics going with relatively large groups, we had 144 starts out of the pre-registered 161.
Charles Carrick and Rob Field seemed to be everywhere and filling in everywhere to help keep things running smoothly and performed above and beyond. Control Pick Up was quick with Will Chesarek, Charles Carrick, John Organek, John Baker, Rob Fields, and Aaron Linville all returning to the course on short notice to help.
We also had spectacular support from the Dumfries Triangle Volunteer Fire Department who were on hand, in case we needed them- thankfully, we didn't. I think Lt Goodman, FF/EMT Beach, FF/EMT Jeany Paz, FF Alexander and DTVFD President David Glinski enjoyed a great day in the woods. Maybe they will try a course next year?
I think we have found the sweet spot balancing our safety procedures with having a great time. Everyone followed the procedures without coaching.
I hope to see everyone at Balls Bluff on November 1st. I have already signed up to volunteer!
