Near the Stafford/Prince William County line, take I-95 Exit 148. Go west as you exit the interstate, and proceed about 1.3 miles on Russell Rd/MCB-1 to the guard station (after the traffic light). You will need to show government-issued photo ID there, and say that you are attending QOC's orienteering event. Only pre-registered participants will be allowed on base. Once through the gates, follow QOC signs to the event area. You may not drive on any other roads. A directional map in PDF format to LZ Peregrine (our registration area) is available here. |

Travelling South on I-95, take exit 148 toward Marine Corps Base Quantico. Use the right 2 lanes to turn right onto Russell Rd. [IFF going to the VCC, then turn left on Talmadge & Telegraph.] Once through the security gates continue onto MCB 1.
Go straight through the traffic light at 1.7 miles, travel another 0.6 miles, and turn right at the intersection to continue on MCB 1 (watch for the QOC Orienteering sign). Continue on MCB 1 for another 5.7 miles to N Hangman Tree Rd (watch for another QOC Orienteering sign). Turn right on N. Hangman Tree Rd and travel approximately 2 miles to Landing Zone (LZ) Canary. About This Venue
Marine Corps Base Quantico (MCBQ) is a large, active US Marine Corps installation south of Washington, D.C. near the Occoquan area. QOC has held periodic events across several different training areas on the base over the years, including Beaver Dam Run/DZ Cockatoo, LZ Canary, and Camp Barrett.
The training areas QOC has used are typically expansive, rolling woodland, with a full set of classic courses set to take advantage of the terrain each time. Because the base is large and QOC rotates among its training areas, the specific terrain in use varies somewhat from year to year.
MCBQ is distinctive among QOC's venues less for its terrain difficulty than for its setting and logistics; active-duty military attend for free, and events here regularly draw participation from students at The Basic School based at MCBQ.
Because this venue is on a working military installation, access is controlled. DoD CAC/ID card holders enter directly at the security checkpoint; other adult visitors need a one-day base access pass from the Visitor Control Center in advance, which requires a Real ID driver's license or a passport (plus additional ID for those without a Real ID). Every attendee 18 or older must sign a base waiver, and minors need one signed by a parent or guardian. Pets are allowed on base but must be leashed. Given these requirements, plan to arrive earlier than usual at this venue.
