Mason Neck SP

Mason Neck State Park occupies a peninsula on the lower Potomac surrounded by national wildlife refuges, overlooking Belmont Bay. It is one of QOC's flattest venues.

The park's coastal plain terrain has notably subtle contours, mapped at a finer 2.5-meter interval rather than the usual 5 meters, and lacks the spur-and-reentrant terrain typical of Northern Virginia. Runners find predominantly open, runnable woods, with steeper ground limited mostly to re-entrants leading down to marshes and tidal water, and large areas with few trails or point features; rootstocks in particular aren't fully reliable for navigation, since not all are mapped and some mapped ones have eroded. All courses cross High Point Road, the park's entrance road, at least once, and the open marshes along Kanes Creek on the park's north edge can become impassable after heavy rain. QOC sets a full range of classic courses here, from white through blue.

Because the terrain forces reliance on compass skills and pace counting rather than obvious handrails, Mason Neck is a good venue for developing those fundamentals — though its subtlety means it's better suited to solidifying your usual course level than moving up a level on. Its flat, open going also makes it a favorite for groups and families.

The park charges a per-vehicle entrance fee for in-state and out-of-state visitors. It also offers a bike path, canoe and kayak rentals, and a playground near the usual registration area. QOC has run events at Mason Neck for many years.
