It was a sunny late winter day at Prince William Forest for over 300 orienteers on Sunday March 7. Gary Smith and Paul Hession designed and implemented a complete set of classic courses on some of the best terrain in Northern Virginia. Our COVID-19 protocols have enabled the club to operate these large local meets with efficiency.
I want to recognize the behind-the-scenes volunteers that make the meet director’s job easier than ever before. It all starts with course setters designing and spending many hours in the field checking map control points. When the courses are drafted on the maps, they are submitted to Park personnel for approval. Once approved the next step is setting up the website event page and managing the on-line registration and payment process. Greg Lennon makes all this happen. Once registrations are finalized, Valerie Meyer begins the map printing process that includes formatting, printing and now inserting and sealing the 350+ maps in their cases. This extra step is much appreciated by the meet directors and allow a contactless distribution of maps. All of these tasks were adopted to keep the club operating during the pandemic. They have not only achieved that goal but also have improved the operations of our local meets. I can’t thank these folks enough for the extra effort and time to keep us orienteering during these challenging times. And hopefully, these changes become our standards going forward.
On the day of the meet, the meet directors and the e-punch timing crew arrive early to set everything up. Amy Louden, chief cookie maker and e-punch guru is always there to set up around 8:00 am and stays until all the controls are out of the field and checked in, usually around 4:30. That is a really long day and she is at most every meet doing these volunteer duties. And she brings dozens of homemade cookies to share with the finishers. It takes a special person to commit this much time to supporting orienteering. Thank You Amy for all that you do.
Greg, Valerie and Amy are Quantico Orienteering Club’s Super Volunteers.
I would also like to thank the other volunteers that made this meet a success. Tim McCormick helped with the many duties of meet director and directed parking. Sid Sachs directed parking. The e-punch team, Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer was helped by Lailah Strube and Wendy Wroblewski. Ben Freiberg did a great job with competitor check-in. Tom Strat, Charles Carrick, Justin Green, John Organek, Will Chesarek, Paul Hession and Gary Smith shared control pick up duties at the end of the meet.
I want to recognize all the members that helped an injured orienteerer out of the woods. Thanks to those that stayed with him, checked on him and came back to report his injury. It was a good feeling to see all of you care for your fellow runners. I want to thank Gary Smith and Paul Hession for assisting the park rangers with the evacuation process. The PWF Park Rangers were professional and well trained as they evacuated the runner and got him the medical assistance he needed. We wish him a quick recovery.
As I write this report, I am reminded of all the great people that are members of the Quantico Orienteering Club and that is a privilege to part of this great organization. To all of you that have yet to volunteer, please get involved, you will find it rewarding!
