Rockwood Park

On Saturday, 5 February 2011, a Learn-O was held at the Rockwood Park Nature Center south of Richmond, Virginia. It was wet, cold and rainy all day, so only 13 people showed up. One hour of instruction introducing Orienteering to the group was followed by a 5 point, short, White course to get the group used to the map and the ground and to practice simple navigation skills learned. They were then gathered to go over what was learned, warm up, dry out, and then learn yellow level skills on features, map symbols, distance, compass, and route choice. Then they were sent out on a 4km, 18 point course in score-O format that included one Orange control. Assistance was provided as needed on both courses, including feedback throughout. One student left early, but the others braved the weather and completed the course. Special thanks goes to Kristi Orcutt for scheduling the course and making the handouts. Thanks goes to Ellen Stefaniak for putting the maps together and setting the White Course. Also, thanks to Alec Richardson for control pickup of both courses. Finally, thanks to all 3 for assisting with instruction both in the classroom and on the courses.
