April 21
Sunday

Fountainhead

Pre-registration is required and will open Monday, 15 April at 6pm and close on Saturday, 20 April at 12 noon; there is no day-of registration.

Come out and enjoy our brief Washington-area spring at Fountainhead Regional Park in Clifton, Virginia -- some of our favorite terrain. Course setter Justin Brown has designed a full set of classic courses, from beginner (white & yellow) to all advanced courses. This is Justin's first solo course-setting for QOC so please take some time to provide feedback after you finish your course if you have any observations.

Check in and map pick-up will be at Shelter 1 next to the main parking lot, and the E-punch team will set up in its customary location in the shack at the end of the parking lot.

Parking Note: Although the Fountainhead main parking lot is very large and there is a second lot near the waterside with additional space, we expect that if this event has decent weather, the park will be heavily used and parking will be at a premium. If there is no parking left in the main parking lot, follow the park road loop down to the lakeshore and park in the lower lot. We are also allowing more early starts so more orienteers can get parked and out on their courses before peak park use.

Volunteers: You're Appreciated! Sign up for a volunteer slot via this form.

Custom QOC JerseysBack By Popular Demand - Jersey Orders: Come check out the custom QOC jerseys and confirm your preferred size and style! We'll have them on display at this event from ~10:30am - 12pm. Orders must be placed before April 22; details are here.

String OFor The Kiddos! Come and try the free "string-O". What's a string-O, you ask? As their first step towards becoming an orienteer, kids follow a course marked with string in a small area to find their favorite Disney characters (under parental supervision). Minimum effort for parents, maximum fun for kids!

Keep in mind:

  • All participants must pre-register; there is no day-of registration.
  • Participants are responsible for meeting all their own hydration needs before, during, and after their courses.
  • As always, please be off the course no later than 3 pm and remember to download at our e-punch station even if you did not finish.
  • Beginner's instruction will be available.
  • For those new to orienteering, make sure to check out our Your First Event and Orienteering Techniques For Beginners webpages, and if they don't answer any question you have, just use our Contact Form to ask.
  • Group Leaders (of larger groups): please contact the Event Director so they are aware of your plans.
  • Restrooms near Shelter 1 will likely be open for this event. If not, port-a-johns will be near Shelter 1.
  • Dogs are allowed in the park but must be on the leash at all times.

Course NotesClassic

Brown and Green courses have a remote start that is about a 20 minute hike. This is intended to get you to areas of the map that haven't been used much by these courses in the past. If the added time and distance impacts your course, I'd recommend dropping down a color or do the Beige or Orange course.

As of the end of March, the vegetation on map appears to be accurate. I found there to be many nice open areas of forest. On the Brown/Green/Red/Blue courses, there are a few places where two controls are about 100 meters apart and have the same type of feature. These are on different courses or a later part of the same course. Be sure to check the control number to prevent a missed punched. Most courses are on the shorter side to account for climb.

Map Scale is 1:10,000 for Brown/Green/Red/Blue. 1:7,500 for Beige/Orange. 1:5,000 for Yellow/White.

Group Entries

Participants are welcome to orienteer together as a group (up to the maximum for that event; usually 4). Each member of a group is charged their individual rate as shown above, up to a group total of $30 (maximum), and each receives a map. A group receives one epunch. Individuals or groups desiring to compete on a second course after completing their first can do so for a reduced fee of $2/map subject to approval at the event by the Event Director.

Important Notes
  • If you wish to become a QOC member you should join online in advance via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch will be loaned one for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) can be purchased from online vendors as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (such as car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • Beginners are encouraged to watch relevant videos such as this one created by QOC's instructional guru David Onkst
