Thank you to everyone who joined our orienteering meet at Swanson Road / Marlboro Natural Area on Saturday, May 17, 2025. The weather was sunny with brilliant blue skies all day after a stormy Friday evening, but very warm and breezy with temperatures reaching the upper 80s F during the afternoon. We had 143 starts and 176 total participants who ran a set of classic orienteering courses designed and set by Tom Nolan. All the feedback about Tom’s courses I heard from orienteers was positive, with enjoyable and challenging navigation.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible, including several not listed below who offered their help as backup and/or helped with miscellaneous tasks during the day. As a result of their efforts, the event went smoothly from start to finish.

• Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer, our e-punch gurus, worked the timing tent all day as orienteers started and finished their courses, with Valerie also printing all the maps the day before. Aaron Linville helped with timing while Amy and Valerie were out on their courses.
• Greg Lennon handled the event page updates on the QOC website, as well as the registration form process for orienteers and volunteers.
• Craig Shelden and family set up caution tape, stakes, and cones outlining the last 100 m to the parking area past the gravel drive, on Friday before the event. Despite the wet conditions in the morning, everyone was able to navigate the area in their cars without getting stuck. Craig also rendered all the course maps prior to printing.
• Jody and Cecelia Landers coordinated parking in the open field next to the barn. Luckily, it wasn’t too muddy after all the rainfall in the week prior to the event!
• Reiko Rager, Harry Jones, Neri Terry, and several others helped set up in the morning, hoisting canopies to shield the volunteers from the hot May sun.
• Harry Jones and Justin Green handled event check-in during the early shift, with Dawn Savage working check-in for the second shift.
• Erin Brandt and Reiko Rager taught beginner instruction for several individuals and groups of new orienteers.
• Dawn Savage, Erin Brandt, Jody Landers, Craig Shelden, John Baker, and the Jepsen family (Kim, Anne, and Esben) were our faithful team who headed back into the woods to pick up controls despite the hot, breezy conditions in the afternoon. A special thank you to Dawn, Erin, Jody, and Craig, who each took on more than one volunteer role which was a tremendous help!
• Mark Mace, Reiko, and several others helped with event cleanup, collecting the meet kit and control kit for QOC’s final event of the season in two weeks.
• Mike Newman facilitated park permitting for the Marlboro Natural Area venue and secured portajohn rentals for our event.
• Sidney Sachs provided statistics for the final count of orienteers who attended the event and updated the season-long points standings.
• Sharmagh Yepremian organized a social event for orienteers after the meet, at Panera.

Finally, I (Massey) want to thank Reiko and several others for answering my many, many questions about event duties in the weeks and days prior to the event, since this was my first time volunteering to be event director.
