Despite brief showers around 10 am and harrowing reports of an aggressive raccoon waylaying orienteers along a stretch of lakeside, the first event of QOC's 2023-2024 season went off smoothly with 176 starts and orienteers able to enjoy the use of the new bridge/ramp over the dam spillway.
Congratulations to all the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics participants and especially to gold medalist, Einar Olsen, who stepped up from his usual Orange to a resounding triumph on the NVSO Brown course.
Thanks, of course, to our volunteers for getting the new season off to a great start:
--First, and especially, Mark Thomsen for providing us with a challenging set of courses that made the most of this small venue and also for beginning the much-needed remapping of Lake Accotink Park.
--Second, as always, the key individuals who support every single event: Greg Lennon on pre-registration, Craig Shelden on course map prep, Valerie Meyer on map production, and Amy Louden and Valerie--again--on e-punch.
--Our check-in crew: Beatri Bennett, who stepped in as a last-minute replacement, Alicia Wooten, and Megan Introna.
--And on beginner instruction, Gary Smith, Neal Attfield, and Miro and Dominik Honzak, as well as those who went back out to pick up controls and got back just before heavier rain began to fall: Scott Sharp, Patrick Farley (and Rainey), Jared Silk, George Hornberger, Rob Field and Mark Thomsen.
Finally, a special thanks to Park Manager, Dan Grulke, who helped iron out last-minute permit issues and to Rana who repeatedly stopped by our shelter to see that we had everything we needed.
