QOC's meet at Seneca Creek State Park (MD) on September 26, 2022 turned out to be a busy and beautiful day, thanks to our volunteers and lots of runners. We had 271 starts (!), with a number of runners having come back for a second map they enjoyed the first so much. That is the most in the records I've seen for a local event. Almost 100 of the starts were JROTC from four clubs. Simultaneously, John Cummings and his team led Junior Training.
The Seneca Creek park manager checked in with us early and made sure we knew how to contact her should we need her assistance.
The day promised to be rainy in the afternoon with a good chance of thunder and lightning, but turned out to be sunny much of the day and a great running temperature -- mostly in the 70s (F). The storms went north of us and we had only brief rain. Refreshing. The vegetation was robust and the ground generally dry. We had a few hiccups, as normally occur, and people provided some effective and rapid problem-solving.
Thank you to all who volunteered at the meet at Seneca Creek. It would not have succeeded without your willingness, competence, creativity, and overall cheerfulness. (Did you know you get a point for each time you volunteer?) This is the list I have of all those who volunteered: Please tell me if you if you know of anyone I may have missed.
Peggy Dickison -- course designer and course setter extraordinaire, for what I heard were fun courses and for handling the whole process herself
Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer - E-punch and liaison with NROTC starts
Valerie Meyer and Roger Meyer - map printing and sealing
Suzanne Izzo and Amy Louden -- Event set-up
Harry Jones - Check-in and steadfast helper throughout the meet
Jason Hataye, Meilynn Hataye, and Sharmagh Yepremian - also on check-in. Meilynn deserves special kudos for being the youngest volunteer and showing obvious competence at it.
Dasa Merka and Alex Merka -- setting QOC and OUSA banners
Kathleen Lennon - sorting and organizing kit boxes
Greg Palardy, Diane Mukharjee, David Levine, Christopher Puin, and Zach Kuder -- beginner instruction
Ted Good for clean-up and packing, and all-around help and education through much of the meet
Michael Dickey, Rob Field, Patrick Field, Paul Hession, David McIntire, Glenn Pastel, Jared Silk, and Jens Wira making up a strong control pick-up team, and who generally led me through my first time managing that.
Dan Lathrop certainly deserves a shout-out; he stopped his course and returned to registration to alert us to a misnumbered control. That was an important and responsible interruption for him and he helped us make the day more enjoyable for the many runners who followed (not to mention avoided e-punch problems).
I'd like to give a general shout-out to Craig Shelden and Greg Lennon for answering my many questions, undertaking extra tasks, and providing moral support. For those who have not directed a meet yet, know that they will not abandon you through the learning process. I appreciated also that they and Don Fish checked in with me during the meet. I appreciate the QOC community and all of you who make the extra effort to support this fantastic club.
