Prince William Forest Pine Grove

It was a great day for the 221 orienteers running about in Prince William Forest. The conditions were not too cold but certainly a bit damp (though described as ‘dry’ by the 65 runners who braved Little Bennett the day before).

Thanks to Prince William Forest Park for letting us host an orienteering event in classic Mid-Mid-Atlantic terrain and approving our courses as-is.

Mark Hicks designed a full set of courses. In attendance we had we had 5 NJROTC Groups: Calvert, Huntingtown, Loudoun Co, Patriots and Patuxent. Fork Union Military Academy was also in attendance. Trail Life USA Troop 2215 camped in the park all weekend prior to running their courses. In addition, we had several out-of-town orienteers including one very speedy Swede.

We’d like to thank Scott Sharp, Diana Aleksieva and Paul Hession for directing parking. We appreciate everyone’s patience with the last minute parking changes due to the closure of Williams Ballfield (due to mud).

Thanks to Mark Thomsen, Tavia Sullens, Jana Seidlova and Daniel Minar for helping with registration. Special thanks to Blaire Bingham, who even though she is benched from orienteering with a sprained ankle, made it out anyway to help with registration!

Matthew Knight, John Studach and Rick Oliver provided beginner instruction.

On control pickup was Will Chesarek, Patrick Farley, Rob Field and Charles Carrick; along with Mark Thomsen and Tavia Sullens who pulled double duty after their registration shifts and running their courses; last but not least were John Organek and Victor Lin who are the Event Director and Course Designer for the January 6th meet at Fountainhead West. Pro-tip for upcoming Event Directors: the Event Director and Course Designer of the next meet are prime candidates for control pickup as you can pass off your meet supplies to them after pickup!

Last, always a big thanks to our e-punch crew: Amy Louden and Valerie Meyer. They’re the ones who make the instant gratification of electronic timing possible. Remember to thank them next time you’re huddled around the live results screens eating one of Amy’s baked goods.
