It was a beautiful December day for orienteering at Mason Neck state park. First we want to thank the park for their hospitality, especially the early morning leaf blowing in the registration area and the path to the restrooms.

We had close to 200 starts, including NJROTC groups from Great Mills Maryland, Loudoun County High School, Patuxent High School, and the Patriots. Mason Neck is a pretty flat park and is a great place to practice pace counts and compass work. Aaron Linville set up a pace course to help people hone their skills.

We had an awesome registration crew of Harry Jones, Chris and Mike Bianchetta, and Daniel Heimgartner. Matthew Knight was busy helping review the basics of orienteering and e-punching, and helping beginners learn the sport. Rick Oliver was also on hand for beginner instruction. Many thanks to the control pick-up volunteers who made quick work of taking down the courses: Phillip Wadsworth, Will Chesarek, Mark Thompson, Paul Hession, Bill Wright, John Baker, and Rob Field (who, along with Tavia Sullens, helped Aaron set controls on Saturday). Thanks to Valerie Meyer for last minute assistance with the maps, and for handling e-punching. Last but not least, thanks to Amy Loudon for arriving early and staying late to make sure the e-punching system gives people instant results. Thanks also to Wendy W for helping Amy pack up. Help is always appreciated at the end of the day!!
