The Chase, aka the longest continually running orienteering race in the USA, + Annual Meeting + Potluck Picnic + lots more, as QOC's 2015-2016 Sept - June season comes to a close! Newcomers are welcome - we'll have plenty of challenges, suited for all levels from beginner to advanced.
As is the tradition of this event, there will be a common mass start at High Noon for all courses.
Pre-registration Is Now Closed - register at the event. This event is free to all members who pre-register, and non-members who pre-register get discount member rates. Pre-register here before midnight Friday. You can register at the event between 10:30 - 11:30am at regular event prices.
Sorry, but dogs are not allowed at Jug Bay, for their sake and the sake of numerous traps and food caches used in ongoing studies by the Univ. of MD and the Smithsonian.
10:30am - On site registration opens.
11:30am - On site registration closes.
11:33am - Annual Meeting/Voting for Board Members
12:00 - Mass Start for The Chase
So here's how the event will run, at least in theory:
In addition to the Annual Election of Officers, the membership will vote on a Proposed Revision of the club By-laws. It has been 18 years since the By-laws were last revised and based on the recommendations of a Special By-law Committee and a review by the Board of Directors a revised set of By-laws is being submitted for approval at the General Membership Meeting. A copy of the Proposed Revised By-laws can be downloaded by clicking “Revised By-laws.” A Synopsis of the Proposed Revision is also available to be downloaded by clicking “Synopsis.” A copy of the current club Bylaws can be viewed on the QOC web site, by clicking “Current Bylaws”.

QOC provides beverages, desserts and paper goods. Attendees should bring picnic foods to share at this potluck. A charcoal grill is available and BBQing is encouraged. We recommend keeping food in a cooler until after you finish your run.
Please bring water shoes if you want to go into the water because of possible broken glass on the river bottom. And bring your family, chairs to sit on, sun block and bug spray - the mosquitoes may come to picnic too, depending on the weather. Feel free to bring kayaks or canoes if you would like to enjoy the waters of Jug Bay, and launch right from the beach.
Plan now to hang around afterwards for the food and drinks, and to hear about all the great plans for our upcoming Sept. 2016 - June 2017 season!
NO PETS allowed in the park. No exceptions.
Convenient Parking is limited so carpooling is encouraged.
As there is a mass start, Registration and parking will be crowded so don’t wait until the last moment to show up.
Registration will need to close on time in order to hold the annual meeting at 11:30.
This event will be a traditional Beverage Chase event (no tricks this year).
Courses are made up of loops. Participants will drink their beverages (water/soda/beer) before and after each loop.
White: One beginner level loop
Yellow: Two beginner level loops
Orange: One intermediate level loop
Long Orange: One intermediate + one beginner loop
Short Advanced: One advanced loop
Medium Advanced: Two advanced loops
Long Advanced: Three advanced loops
There will be just one mass start regardless of the course being done.
Beverage of Choice (specified at registration) will be consumed at the start, finish and in between each loop. Beverages are water, soda, and beer (for adults only). There is a map exchange between loops (or the maps may be back to back in the same map case). Each loop control numbers start at #1 on the map.
Following is allowed at this event but be wary of following anyone who might get lost!

The terrain is similar to the Patuxent River Park with no point above 100 feet above sea level. There are lots of flat bland areas with scattered marshes.
The woods are generally open and very fast. Map vegetation was last updated in 2011. Minor map updates were made as I was vetting the courses.
The vegetation on the map is more a visual boundary then an actual speed indicator. The lighter green can be run through easily. The darker green tends to be mountain laurel or in some case close together saplings and will slow you down some.
There are unmapped white PVC pipes (1 meter tall) in the woods.
There are sections of broken ground on the map. The broken ground tends to be small bumps less than foot high and you will run right through them.
Respect the out of bounds areas.
Sun: Don’t forget to put on lotion to protect yourself even if it is overcast.
Fields: All fields should be considered rough open even if mapped as open on the map. The big field around the farm has grown a lot in the last few weeks.
Marshes/Streams: All the upland marshes had water in them recently. By Meet time they may be dry. There is no distinct plant growth in the marshes. You can tell the marshes by the compressed leaves and the leaves have a more rotted look to them.
Bugs: Use Bug Spray. The marshes may/may not be dry but there are still plenty of mosquitoes. Keep moving and you will be fine. There are ticks so check yourself after finishing.
