Fountainhead

Those of you who know Fountainhead know that some of the best orienteering is fairly far north of the area where we usually assemble - so now we have a new assembly area, near the Bull Run Marina at the north end of Fountainhead. That means course setter Francis Hogle will have the opportunity to introduce many orienteers to the delights of "the northern peninsula".

A full set of courses is planned, and event timing is standard: register between 10:45am - 1:15pm, start anytime between 11am - 1:30pm, and be out of the woods by 3:00pm. Full course details and course setter comments will be posted closer to the event date.

As usual, youth groups and other large groups planning to attend this event should contact the Event Director in advance so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.

Additional information:

  • We will be using a parking area on the south side of Old Yates Ford Rd, just a bit east of the actual marina.
  • The area immediately south of our (new) assembly is only preliminarily mapped; for intermediate and advanced orienteers, this area will serve as a 2.5km warmup to the classic terrain even further south.
  • Carpooling is encouraged as a courtesy to other park users.
  • Dogs on leash are welcome.

Note: The last event of our Sept. - June season will be June 12 at Jug Bay. If you're looking for an adventure over the weekend of June 4/5, check out DVOA's Water Gap Rogaine & Sprint weekend, which at least 20 QOC members will be attending. Register before June 1 to avoid a price hike. Event flyer is here and the registration site is here.

Course map scales are: 1:5000 for white, 1:7500 for yellow, and 1:10000 for all other courses. The map to show the walk to the intermediate/advanced remote start is 1:10000.

This part of Fountainhead offers some of the best terrain, and the map used for the orange through blue courses is (still) relatively up to date since it was used for the 2014 UltraLong championships.

Be aware: control bags will begin disappearing at 3pm.

Important Notes
  • At the event, we can only accept payment in cash or check; online, you may use a credit card or PayPal account.
  • If you have access to a smartphone, you may become a member at the event by joining online via this webpage (which also explains the member benefits). Membership is completely optional. If you wish to join or renew, we strongly recommend joining (or renewing) online before the event rather than at it to save time and because it's easier.
  • Most of our events use an 'epunch' timing chip for electronic timing. Individuals or groups without their own epunch pay a higher entry fee (see above), which includes the loan of an epunch for that event. Loaned epunches that are lost incur a $40 replacement fee. Epunches (also known as SI-cards or finger sticks) are usually available for sale at each event as described here.
  • Former QOC members who have let their membership lapse pay non-member fees.
  • Compasses are available at no charge, but if lost incur a $15 replacement fee.
  • Please provide collateral (driver's license or car keys) when borrowing a compass or epunch.
  • For additional safety, whistles are available for sale at $1/each.
  • Free beginner instruction is always available - just ask at the registration table.
