Oregon RidgeThe site of last year's US Night Orienteering Champs, Oregon Ridge is one of our favorite parks - the woods are great for both on- and off-trail running, and there are plenty of amenities nearby including a very family-friendly Nature Center.

We will have the classic set of orienteering courses on offer (beginner/white through advanced/blue). Register anytime between 10:45 - 1:15, start some time between 11 - 1:30, and by whatever means necessary be back no later than 3pm.

Any youth or large groups attending, please contact the Event Director so that we can coordinate pre-registration for your group; the group registration and waiver form is part of the information on our Group Leaders page.

While Oregon Ridge Park hosts a fine Nature Center a bit away from this year's registration area, we will have the use of the nearby lodge restroom facilities. Of additional note:

  • The park has a large playground near our registration area.
  • Dogs are welcome in the park, but must be on a leash at all times.
  • Geocachers take note - several favored caches are in this park.
  • Free beginner instruction is available as always - just ask at registration.

Post-Event Socializing: There's a huge 'Market Cafe' in the Wegman's just 5 minutes (2 miles) east of Oregon Ridge on Shawan Road, just east of I-83 exit 20, with many food selections and plenty of sit-wherever-you-like seating on the second floor (store & market cafe map here). It's a fine place to meet up and compare maps, whether you're having just a coffee or soda or a full meal, and it's suitable for both kids and adults. Yelp review of this store with over 20 photos here.

Course NotesClassic

The upper wooded areas are very open and allow for quick running even at this time of year. The lower areas have intricate vegetation details and navigation is very important.

Map Notes:
There is some extensive logging occurring in the park and some areas will either run through or next to the logged areas. the logged areas are not clear cut (only about 2/3 of the trees are cut down). It does add some slash intermittently to the ground but there are also new vehicle tracks in the area. I haven’t field checked the area as they are still logging but suffice to say that all the small features in the area are gone (i.e. use contours only in this area). They are still logging so the area may get larger before the meet. I have mapped the logged area (approximately as a green hash overlay).
Most point features on the map are very small and easy to miss. I updated many of them but didn't cover the whole map.

  • There are many dot knolls on the map. Most of these are quite small and may be easily missed.
  • There are many rides on the map. These tend to be old trails and are useful for navigation but don’t provide faster running. They tend to be sunken into the ground.
  • Root stocks are at least a meter high. Green X's are root stocks. Larger root stock tree trunks are mapped with a solid green line.
  • Green circles are holly trees.
  • Black X’s can be anything to include: archery targets, Pipeline poles, Monitoring stations, Picnic tables. In the heavily used part of the park I am not sure the X's match up anymore to whatever they were. In the pipeline clearings, a single X represents pipe line marker poles.
  • In the woods there are 3-4 ft high telephone poles that were marked as black X's. They are almost impossible to find. I changed the ones I found to gray circles but some may still be black X's.
  • Individual rocks are quite small, about a foot high.
  • The park boundary is a gray line. Please respect the private property.
  • Most of the green on the hill sides is mountain laurel.
Course Notes:
There are no control descriptions on the map as they didn't fit; take a separate one.
Because of the big hill, all courses will some long climb sections.
Advanced Courses: the beach area of the lake is closed at this time of year so I have put a small out of bounds on the map to show that the gate is closed. It is possible to run around the fence.
Blue: Will have a control in the logged area.
Red & Green: will run along the logged area unless it expands in which case you will be in it.
